If a barrel is described as Refill or Second Fill, then we are talking about brand re-used barrels that have already been used to age an alcohol.
Common types of Second Fill casks include; ex-Bourbon, Sherry and Red Wine barrels. These barrels have a less intense wood flavour and will add characteristics of their First Fill to the whisky. The spirit will also have a mellower and smoother taste.
Second Fill barrels will add a light oak and sweet vanilla flavour to the whisky as well as secondary flavours that come from the First Fill. These can include notes of dried fruit, spices, nuts, honey, toffee and caramel. The whisky will also have a softer and more mellow finish.
